Telephone Number Spoofing: What It Is and How to Outsmart It

How does a phone call look like it’s coming from the bank, when in reality, it’s not?

Scammers commonly use software, both free and paid, to exploit VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), allowing them to manipulate the caller ID to display any number they choose. Often times, the local number exchanges (708) 946 or (708) 258 are used to increase the chances of the recipient picking up. In some cases, the software can even alter the caller ID display name, like First Community Bank and Trust’s, making the call appear even more convincing.

Usually this type of spoofing is performed in a random calling fashion, simply calling numbers and hoping that the call is answered. However, in more targeted attacks, a specific caller ID could be spoofed, such as First Community Bank and Trust’s, and the caller could represent themselves as calling from the bank to try and cause financial harm.

Telegram is a popular platform used by fraudsters to communicate and market with each other. Advertisements on Telegram offer spoofing services that allow alternating caller ID’s, hold music, incoming (call back) call routing, custom name displaying, support for 200+ concurrent calls, and worldwide calling. These services make even amateur scammers look professional, making it harder for victims to tell the difference between a legitimate call and a cleverly staged scam.

If you don’t recognize the caller or you were not expecting the call, be careful. In person calls can be more dangerous than email or text messages because the caller often pressures you into making snap decisions, without the time to pause and think like you would with a written message. This is classic scammer psychology; creating urgency and catching you off guard so you’ll act before thinking.
